Times Square is going green! This is so exciting.

Written by Annie on November 16th, 2008

This winter, something new will be happening in Times Square (other than, of course, New Years). As you may have heard, Times Square will be getting its very first environmentally friendly billboard, powered 100% by wind and sun.

As you likely already know, Times Square is a one of many world famous New York landmarks featured on numerous films and books and postcards, especially of it at night. Until I read this New York Times article, it never really occurred to me that powering up all those lights must cost a lot of energy.

Although the billboard may dim up a bit on a calm, cloudy day, it’s designed so it can stay powered for days without substantial wind or sun. We’re always talking about being more environmentally friendly - and whether you believe in global warming or not - I think it can be agreed that using renewable resources whenever possible is a great idea.

This billboard will be ready by early next month, which subsequently means that it will be the center of attention when the shiny disco-like ball drops in front of it during New York’s annual New Years celebration. The eco-friendly billboard will bring something new this year. May 2009 be filled with more eco-friendly news!

I am a big fan of renewable resources, can you tell?

Yes, I can. Good job! Annie. We should not let the most commercial squre in the world keep silent with the green call. The businessmen might think the Times Square should be the last place to react to the renewable resources, since its commercial value outweights its environmental value. They should also think that more people will be influenced positively, if the eco-friendly news come from Times Square. The commercial behaviors need to be led. You are the leader!

Hi, Yogurt! It’s very true, businessmen often think the commercial value is far more important that the so-called environmental value that may not even matter. Times Square is indeed a great place to start, being at the center of so much. When this billboard makes it into the postcards, then people will be even more aware. The commercial behaviors have been going in the same direction for far too long, they need something to spice them up. If that makes sense.

Hi! Annie. Glad to see your prompt response. I believe it makes sense that commercial behaviors need something to spice them up. Businessmen could also seriously sort out their garbage when they stay at home. I suppose they should not be object to green standing. The problem, I guess, could be that it might be hard for businessmen to associate every behavior in their daily life with the green requirements. So spice-up, in my opinion, could play an deserved role in reminding the busy guys of that they could actually become better persons.

Wow, I’m glad you mentioned businessmen sorting out their garbage. I’m sure that if even just a few major companies stepped up their waste management efforts (i.e. recycling?) or reused their stuff (e.g. not buying computers every two years) it would do so much more than all the itty-bitty super-environmental things the super-environmentalists are doing.

And yes, busy guys can become better persons! I like that.
